Alaska Electrical Journeyman License
Before submitting your application, it is advised to have studied the required material.
Before applying for an electrical journeyman license you have to fill the following requirements:
– Have at least 8000 hours (approximately 4 years) of practical job experience, subject to the National Electrical Code (NEC).
- 6000 hours of them must be in the commercial or industry field.
- The maximum residential hours can be up to 2000.
- Part of the 8000 hours can be trade related classroom training (up to 1000 hours) and/or power lineman experience (up to 1000 hours).
- Note that every verification of hours and experiences must be from one of the following: The State of Alaska Experience Verification Form (notarized), a letter with an official letterhead (notarized), a piece of documentation verified through an Alaskan union.
- Maintenance hours do not apply.
– (Solely for renewals) In order to renew your license, you will need to obtain at least 16 hours of ongoing education and at least 8 of CEU hours must include a comprehensive code class that reviews the entire NEC code. This training must occur during the last 24 months since you submitted the application for renewal.
– You will be required to fill the application for certificate of fitness from Department of Labor DOL. This must be done at least two weeks before you would like to be tested. Also, the following three items must be sent together as a package and not separately.
- Fill the application for certificate of fitness .
- Attach to the application an original verification of the required number of hours for the license.
- $50.00 (at the moment of writing this) application fee (for the test). Fees may be paid by cash, check, money order, Visa or Mastercard. Please make checks payable to the State of Alaska. Do not mail cash .
– Read the instructions for the electrical journeyman application at the application for certificate of fitness and submit the package of the 3 items listed in bullets above.
State of Alabama and specifically the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board respects hours of electrical training acquired from sources like vocational schools and other sources which are certified by the Department of Labor.

Alabama Electrical Contractor License
Electrical Contractor engages in the business of contracting to install, erect, repair or alter electrical equipment for the generation, transmission or utilization of electrical energy and work incidental to the undertaking.
Before submitting your application, it is advised to have studied the required material.
Before applying for an electrical contractor’s license you have to fill the following requirements:
– Have at least 8000 hours (approximately 4 years) of practical job experience in a supervisory or managerial position, in one or more of the following fields.
- Credits are received for experience in one of the following fields: Commercial, Industrial, Residential. Maintenance experience of any type will not receive any credit.
- One year of electrician education will count for half a year practical experience as an electrician, for a total of two years practical experience from the four years required. A copy of the diploma, certificate or transcript is required.
– Read the instructions for the electrical contractor application.
- If you are an employee you will have to attach a Work Affidavit to your application, which will verify the 8000 hours threshold that is required. It cannot be filled by you. You can check below for the persons who can fill it for you.
- If you are self-employed you will not send a Work Affidavit, but you will have to submit a signed and notarized letter to the Alabama Electrical Contractors Board stating: Ownership along with company information,work history (i.e. months and dates) and a description of the electrical experience acquired in the business. You will also have to attach to the application a recent photograph passport size (2×2). Note: The business entity job list, still has to be filled (it can be found here , below the guidelines).
– Submit your application (can be found below the instructions here ) directly to the Board Office, checking the following prerequisites.
- Mark the appropriate category (By Exam or Reciprocal).
- All questions and information requested are provided.
- Obtained required and notarized signatures
- Passport photo (2×2 inches)
- Completed work experience and (if employee) work affidavit (this “bullet” is required for either Exam or Reciprocity)
– After your application to take the test is approved, you will have to submit a cashier’s check or money order in the amount of $165.00 (at the moment of writing this) during the following 10 days.
– Study the guidelines given. References and information about the test can be found on page 10 of 12. The test will take 5 hours and the number of questions is 110.
– If you want to apply by Reciprocity Agreement, please read the instructions at the end of this page (before the forms needed to be filled).
The Work Affidavit must be completed by someone in the following departments/positions:
- Human Resources Department
- Company President/CEO
- Electrical Contractor
- Master Electrician
- Electrical Engineer
- Electrical Inspector
