How to Become an Electrician in Mississippi

To be an electrician and legally perform electrical services in Mississippi , one must posses a license. There are 2 different types of contractor licenses and an electrician’s license:

Mississippi Master Electrician License

It is noted at the examination bulletin, that you will have to apply for a master electrician’s license, then get approved to participate in the appropriate exams, pass them and receive your license.

However, an application for a master electrician license is not available in Mississippi State Board of Contractors. This might be due to the discontinuation of this statewide license. This might have happened and the bulletin might not be updated.

Master Electrician Exam Information

The test consists of 80 questions and the time frame is 3 hours . Under this license you can do unlimited electrical work. You will need a score of 70% or higher in order to pass. The exact content outline of this test can be found at page 25 .

Mississippi Commercial Contractor License

You must apply for a commercial contractor’s license. If you are approved, then you will be able to participate in the exams. After you pass them, you can receive your license.

First of all, the application can be found here .

In the application you can find all the relevant information you will need, detailed step-by-step instructions on how to apply for a commercial contractor’s license and what this license includes (scope of work that can be done, etc.). There is a non-refundable fee of $200 for the application. This amount must be made with a check made payable to the “State Board of Contractors”, plus $50 for each additional classification. The check must be sent with the application. Do not include money or other form of payments.

There is reciprocity for this license with the following states and their specific boards, which can be found at the reciprocity application : Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama.

Commercial Contractor Exam Information

For this license you will have to take and pass two tests. The first one is the “Law and Business Management Examination”. This test consists of 50 questions and the maximum time allowed is 2 hours . You will need a score of 70% or higher in order to pass. The exact content outline of this test can be found at page 8 .

The exam is open book and the following reference is allowed in the test center:
